Self-esteem crashers
Negative talk from parents and communities as we grow up. There are parents out there who shred their own children’s self-esteem by calling them names, expecting the highest standards, and rejecting their children’s individuality
Negative self-talk- every person has a self-dialogue that guides us on what we believe and what we think, which results in our actions. If our self-talk is negative, we will suffer low self-esteem.
Lack of support from family, society, and government. Support from our families is the biggest confidence booster we can find. Due to lack of support in our childhoods, we will question who we are in our families and how we fit in, which leads to low self-esteem. If we are seen as being different in our society, it can lead to low self-esteem, e.g. racism.
Angry customer service–there is a lot of bad customer service in the shops, airports, or services we need. If the person you are interacting with seems bored, uninterested, or worse, are looking at their phone the entire time you are needing their service, it leaves a bad taste in our mouths. Everyone wants to feel that they matter all the time. That includes at the time of getting services.
Negative feedback from others–negative talk about who we are as a people from others constantly can make us feel inferior. That is the problem with racism, tribalism, bullying and acting indifferent to others for no reason. People act superior and will not act humane. Even if we ignore it, the damage is being done.
Religion–being told we must be good all the time. There is nothing wrong with being good, but if it means you are giving yourself away or not standing up for what is right, then that is bad. You cannot live in a world of being good without rebuking the devil, so to speak. Therefore, there are times you need to stand up for yourself, and being good is not the answer at such times.
Working bad jobs–it is a cyclical thing. Low self-esteem lead to bad jobs and bad jobs lead to low self-esteem. It’s important to get the education you need and to become the best in your field.
How to overcome low self-esteem?
Speak life in your children’s lives. Be of a positive mindset, encourage your children, and treat your children with respect. The power of life is in the tongue. As a parent, you have that power on your tongue more than anyone who will interact with your children.
Be aware of your inner voice. What is it saying? Is it anything good? This is where self-reflection can save your life.
Get supportive parents and communities. It is never too late for a parent to do right by their children. If you have been messing up, you can ask for forgiveness and try to be a better parent. Your children only get 2 parents and you are important to your child. The communities can stop being too judgemental by allowing individuality and allowing people to be who they are by accepting them in the community.
Start treating your customers and community with respect. You don’t have to give bad customer service. People might forget what they were doing, but they will never forget how you made them feel. That is why businesses that treat people with respect and are known for their great customer service will thrive.
It is up to us as black people to improve our image to the world. We can stop being late at everything, trying to be gangster and all that bad stuff. It’s time we respected ourselves. If you do not respect yourself, no one will respect you.
Stop taking religion too far. People pick and choose bible verses that limit their call to action. Why pray for something but refuse to act? Most people use religion as an excuse to be passive. Jesus was not a pushover. Faith without works is dead. It’s time to take a stand and fight for our rights.
Go to school and become educated. There are so many reasons a lot of black people lack education, including lack of money, big families, and lack of governmental support in education. It’s a good idea for your children to study as far as they can go. The other side of this is you, as a parent, need to be tuned to your child so that you get to know what their talents and blessings are. There is no need to push your child to be good at academics if they are good at sport. Support your child’s talent and help them become the best version of themselves.
